MAVS DEFEAT 'CATS 5-2 IN SERIES FINALE

April 25, 2004

Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas-Arlington baseball team was able to battle through some troubled times and raindrops Sunday afternoon as they avoided being swept by taking the series finale 5-2 over Texas State at Bobcat Field.

TXST (24-19, 11-6 SLC) got on the board in the first inning as Dominic Ramos started the inning with a walk and advanced to third on Kyle Anson's seeing-eye single through the left side. Evan Tierce plate Ramos with a solid single back up the middle. The 'Cats would proceed to load the bases before UTA starter Jake Baxter would get out of the inning without any further damage.

The Mavs (25-19, 10-8 SLC) took the lead in the fourth inning as Dane Ryan singled up the middle and went to third when Brett Lewis executed a perfect hit-and-run when he singled through the left side, exactly where the shortstop would have been playing. Daniel Macha followed with a grounder to first with Ryan get caught in a rundown, but was able to reach the plate safely. Carey Avants followed with a single up the middle to allow Lewis to score the second run.

UTA pushed another run across in the fifth inning as Ryan Nelson started things with a double to left center. Standing on third with two outs, Ryan singled to left field to score Nelson off TXST reliever Michael Gultz for the third run of the game.

The 'Cats got a run back in the fifth as Patrick Crumpton singled to left and moved to second when Ramos reached safely on a bunt back to the mound with nobody covering first. With one out, Tierce hit into a fielder's choice which saw shortstop Lewis' throw sail into the dugout allowing a run to score.

The Mavs got the run back in the sixth as Baker hit his fifth homer of the season over the left field wall for a solo shot.

UTA added an insurance run in the ninth inning as Baker started things with a double passed the bag at third and Batlle sacrificed him to third. After Nelson was intentionally walked, Paul Bruder put down a bunt down the first base line that allowed Baker to score the fifth run of the game.

Baker, Nelson, Ryan and Avants each collected two hits as the team pounded out 13. Kyle Anson collected three for the 'Cats.

Baxter (4-4) earned his first conference victory by allowing two runs on eight hits in eight innings of work. Colgan (2-2) took the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. Mike Snapp earned his ninth save of the season by striking out the side in the ninth. It was Snapp's 120th career appearance ranking him 10th on the NCAA all-time list.

The Mavs return to action on Tuesday, April 27, when they travel to Dallas to take on Dallas Baptist at 7 p.m. at Patriot Field.
