SAN MARCOS, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington used a season high 11 hits and strong pitching from Jill Garro and Nicki Wilson as it dropped league-leading Texas State 6-3 in the nightcap of a Southland Conference doubleheader Saturday at Bobcat Field. The Lady Mavericks took game one of the day by a 3-0 count.
The win improves the Lady Mavs to 14-21 overall and 10-10 in the SLC.
UTA jumped in front early, plating one run in each of the first three frames. April Clougherty worked a walk to start the game and Dee Jay Nelson followed with a double to left field. Autumn Petrino plated the Lady Mavericks first run with a sacrifice fly, her first of the season.
The Lady Mavs bats got hot in the second inning, using three singles and a hit batter for their second run of the game. Lacey Leadbetter and Clougherty got UTA going with back-to-back two-out hits and Kristin Moore loaded the bases after being hit by a Sarah Lancour pitch. Nelson connected for her second hit of the day, giving UTA a 2-0 advantage.
UTA's scoring continued in the third as Autumn Petrino led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Katie Jones sacrifice bunt. After moving to third on a ground out, Petrino scored on an Amanda Swofford single back through the box.
Nelson connected for her third hit of the game in the fourth, this time a two-run home run to give the Lady Mavs a 5-0 advantage. The long ball was Nelson's third of the season and just the fifth for UTA collectively.
Just when it looked as though the Lady Mavs would cruise to an easy victory, the Bobcats bats woke up in the home half of the fifth. Trahan drove in the 'Cats first two runs with a single through the middle.
Holly Britian opened the Texas State sixth with a single to the right side and Ashton Peters followed with a pinch hit double to left center. Leslie Sharp worked a walk from UTA reliever Nicki Wilson before a Kristin Gunter foul out led the the 'Cats third run and cut the deficit to two runs.
After two innings of silence the Lady Mavericks added a run in the seventh with a two-out rally. Autumn Petrino reached on an error by the 'Cats shortstop and Jones singled before Jenna Fortune ripped a run-producing double to center field to give UTA a 6-3 advantage with just the home half of the frame to play.
The 'Cats managed a two-out double in the seventh, but Wilson retired Britain to close out the game.
Jill Garro (9-11) was touched for six hits and three runs (two earned) in her second straight win over the 'Cats. Wilson tossed two innings of one-hit relief for UTA.
Sarah Lancour (4-1) took the loss for TXST after allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits.
Nelson paced the Lady Mavs offensive strike with a 3-for-4 plate appearance with three RBIs and one run scored. Clougherty and Leadbetter each chipped in two hits as UTA tied a season high with 11 hits.
Texas-Arlington will return to action April 16 when it plays host to Stephen F. Austin for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Allan Saxe Field.
