AUSTIN – UT Arlington high jumper
Bryson DeBerry continued to climb the program's all-time record book list on Saturday as the senior delivered the best jump in Mavericks' history, and the women's 4x400 relay team also clocked the best-ever time in program history to highlight UTA's events on the final day of the Texas Relays from Mike A. Myers Stadium.
On his final attempt at the 2.21m (7-03) bar, DeBerry cleared to break his own program mark as the first Mav to ever sail 7 feet and 3 inches outdoors. Facing a group of elite competitors, DeBerry finished 4th in the event, but the 2.21m clearance now stands as the 4th-best in the nation this year and surpassed his previous record of 2.19m (7-02 ¼) set at the NCAA West Preliminary Round last year.
While DeBerry delivered a best-ever mark, the women's 4x400 relay team of
Tatyana Terrell,
Vanessa Ugorji,
Shelby West and
Jade Bontke etched their names in UTA lore as well with the best time (3:38.07) in program history. That time bested the 3:38.86 mark set back in 2015.
That group shaved more than two seconds off their qualifying time on Friday (3:40.65) to finish 6th in the final but still clock the best women's 4x4 time in UTA history.
Joining the 4x4 team and DeBerry
in finals action on Saturday was
Joel Bengtsson competing in the 110m hurdles against a stacked field comprised of many of the country's top collegiate hurdles. Bengtsson finished 5th, crossing in a time of 13.62 (wind: 2.6 m/s).
On Friday in the prelims, Bengtsson delivered the nation's fastest 110m hurdles time this year with a blistering 13.54 to absolutely shatter his previous best and notch the 2nd-best mark in program history.
Next up, UTA turns its focus to the Baylor Invitational in Waco next Saturday, Apr. 2.
