BREHM EARNS FIRST COLLEGIATE VICTORY IN VICTORY OVER CENTENARY

SHREVEPORT, Louisiana - It took until his senior season, but left-hander Derek Brehm finally earned his first collegiate victory when he allowed three runs over five innings in Texas-Arlington's 13-4 victory over Centenary Wednesday evening.

Brehm (1-0) allowed the Gents eight hits over the five innings, while fanning four and walking just one.

UTA (2-2) got on the board in the second inning as Paul Bruder and Josh McSpadden started the inning with singles to put runners on the corners. Carey Avants put down a sacrifice bunt to score Bruder and Kasey Baker scored McSpadden with a single to center field on a 3-2 pitch.

The Mavs added to their lead in the third as Ryan Nelson drew a one out walk and stole second. McSpadden plated Nelson with a single to center field and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. After a passes ball moved the runner to third, Avants fought off four straight pitches and then sent an RBI single to left center field. Brett Lewis advanced the runner after putting down a bunt single to third. Kasey Baker plated the fourth run of the inning with a single through the right side.

UTA added to its lead in the fourth inning as Pence singled, Preston walked and Nelson singled to load the bases with no outs. Bruder plated the first run with a fielder's choice and McSpadden plated the second with a sacrifice fly.

The Gents (2-2) got a pair of runs back in the fourth as designated hitter Joel Hoffman laced an RBI double into the left center field gap. Center fielder Jared Vincent followed with an RBI single back up the middle.

CC pushed across another run in the fifth as a single and an error, followed by a pair of groundouts, led to the third run of the game.

Avants knocked in his third run of the game in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Mavs plated four more runs in the ninth inning as with one out, Aaron Cook walked, Dane Ryan was hit by a pitch and Baker walked. Daniel Macha plated the first run with a fielder's choice to third and Pence followed with a two RBI double off the center field wall. On the next pitch, Daniel Lenihan hit a pinch hit RBI single to right center field.

CC added a run in the ninth on a double off the left field wall by Blake Adkisson.

David Ruffing (0-1) took the loss after allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits in five innings of work.

UTA was led offensively by Pence with three hits and two RBIs. Baker, Nelson, Bruder and McSpadden each collected two hits apiece. Baker and McSpadden each knocked in two and Avants knocked in three. Tony Cardone led the Gents by going 4-for-5 at the plate.

The Mavericks return to action this weekend as they host the UTA Invitational at Clay Gould Ballpark. The first day matchups feature Southwest Missouri State vs. Arkansas-Little Rock at 11:30 a.m. followed by UTA and Oregon State at 3:30 p.m.
